Thinking before
we license

We're still deciding on our licensing model. We want to get it right the first time.

Understanding our approach to licensing

Considering Our Options

We love open source. Terrateam, our GitOps automation tool, is open source software. But Stategraph solves a very specific, narrow problem of managing Terraform state at scale. We need to carefully consider what licensing model will make it sustainable for years to come.

Open source is a one-way street. Once you go open source, there's no going back. The last thing we want is to make a hasty decision and later realize we need a different model to sustain development. That would be a rug pull, and we won't do that to our users.

Infrastructure teams need stability. By taking time to get our licensing right from the start, we ensure that Stategraph can be maintained, improved, and supported for the long haul.

Our Commitment

Whatever licensing model we choose, we commit to

  • Clear, transparent licensing terms
  • No surprise changes that disadvantage existing users
  • Source-available options for security audits and compliance
  • Fair pricing that reflects the value we provide
  • Long-term sustainability without VC pressure

We're exploring open-source, source-available, and proprietary licenses. Each offers a different balance between openness and sustainability, and we want to find the right model to keep investing in Stategraph for the long term.

← Maximum Openness Maximum Sustainability →
Open Source
Full transparency and community contribution, harder to sustain without external funding
Source-Available
Code visible for audit and security, usage restrictions enable sustainable development
Proprietary
Predictable business model, limited transparency, traditional software licensing
